Guess What, Guardian Angels Are Real

guardian angel

How very lovely they must be
Whom God hast glorified.
Yet one of them, O sweetest thought,
Is ever at my side.

How can we not believe the words of Jesus himself: “See that you despise not one of these little [children]: for I say to you, that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.”

For St. Jerome says, “how great the dignity of the soul, since each one has from his birth an angel commissioned to guard it.”

And St. John Chrysostom says, “If then we have Angels, let us be sober, as though we were in the presence of tutors.”

Let us not forget to teach this most important doctrine to our children. And we ought to be moved also to think about how poorly we have treated our guardian angel, who has watched us grow from birth to childhood, through all of our young years and into adulthood . Who has stood by our side both in prayer, and in our sin – having to endure what we have done and report it to God in heaven . Whose only desire is our own salvation which he works for constantly by prayer and nearly imperceptible promptings upon our minds and our senses.

There will come a day when your Guardian Angel will stand beside you at the Judgment Seat. What will he say of you? Are you providing him with enough evidence that you are worthy of God’s mercy?

Here is a hymn you can teach your children. Scroll down to watch a helpful video of the hymn.

Dear Angel, ever at my side,
How loving must thou be,
To leave thy home in heaven to guide
A little child like me.

Thy beautiful and shining face
I see not, though so near;
The sweetness of thy soft, low voice
I am too deaf to hear.

But when, dear spirit, I kneel down,
Both morn and night, to prayer
Something there is within my heart
Which tells me thou art there.

Yes, when I pray, thou prayest too;
Thy prayer is all for me;
But when I sleep thou sleepest not,
But watchest patiently.

How very lovely they must be
Whom God hast glorified.
Yet one of them, O sweetest thought,
Is ever at my side.

Then love me, guide me, Angel dear,
And I will love thee more;
And help me when my soul is cast
Upon the eternal shore.
